What is Tric a Chlic?
Tric a Chlic is a Welsh synthetic phonics programme for children aged 3-7 that teaches children to read and spell in Welsh.
How does it work?
Children learn letter sounds rather than letter names, helping them to blend sounds together to read words and break words apart to spell them.
The Three Stages
The programme is divided into three stages (Cam 1, Cam 2 and Cam 3), with sounds grouped into specific colours:
- Cam 1 – simple 2-3 letter words
- Cam 2 – four-letter and two-syllable words
- Cam 3 – complex spelling patterns and longer words

At Home
Your child may bring home colour-coded books that match the sounds they're learning in class. Resources and videos are available to help you support their learning at home.

Sight Words
Sight words are words that we cannot sound out. The sight words are colour coded to match the stage your child is on.
