Additional Learning Needs (ALN) at Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn

Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is the term used in Wales to describe learners who have a learning difficulty or disability that calls for additional learning provision. This includes a wide range of needs, from specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, to physical disabilities, sensory impairments, or social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties.

At Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn, we are committed to ensuring every learner can achieve their potential. Our Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) works closely with teachers, families, and external professionals to identify needs early and put appropriate support in place.

We follow person-centred planning principles, ensuring that learners and their families are at the heart of all decisions about their education. Where needed, we develop Individual Development Plans (IDPs) that set out specific outcomes and the provision required to meet each learner's unique needs.

Our inclusive approach means that wherever possible, additional support is provided within mainstream classes, helping all our pupils learn and grow together in a supportive environment.

If you have any concerns about your child's learning or development, please don't hesitate to contact our ALNCo via the swyddfa@ffordddyffryn.conwy.sch.uk or 01492878907

Provision Mapping at Our School

What is a Provision Map?

A provision map is a strategic document that outlines the range of additional support, interventions, and resources available across our school. It provides a clear overview of how we meet the diverse needs of all our pupils.

How Provision Maps Work

Our provision map is organised into different levels or waves of support, reflecting the varying degrees of need across our school community. Each level shows the types of interventions, strategies, and resources that may be available at that stage.

It's important to understand that the provision map shows what is potentially available – it is not a list of what every child will receive. Instead, it serves as a framework that helps us plan and deliver targeted support effectively.

Personalised Support Based on Individual Needs

All provision is allocated based on individual pupil needs. Our teachers and ALNCo (Additional Learning Need Coordinator) carefully assess each child to identify any additional support they may require. We then select the most appropriate interventions from our provision map to meet those specific needs.

This means that two children at the same level of support may receive different interventions, because we recognise that every child is unique and learns differently.

Regular Review and Adaptation

We continuously monitor the effectiveness of all interventions and adjust provision as needed. As your child's needs change and develop throughout their time with us, the support they receive may also be adapted to ensure they continue to make good progress.

Questions?

If you would like to discuss provision mapping or your child's individual support in more detail, please contact your child's class teacher or our ALNCo.
