Changes by the Seaside

Our Learning Journey

This term, our class has been exploring the fascinating topic of 'Changes by the Seaside', discovering how both natural and human-made elements transform our coastal environment.

Beach Visit and Environmental Awareness

We began our topic with an exciting trip to the local beach, where the children rolled up their sleeves and took part in a community litter pick-up. This hands-on experience sparked important discussions about the materials we found - helping the children distinguish between man-made items like plastic bottles and crisp packets, and natural materials such as shells, seaweed, and driftwood. The children were amazed to see the impact that human activity can have on our beautiful seaside environment.

Sustainable Learning in the Classroom

Back at school, we transformed our classroom learning by creating our very own recycling centre. This interactive space allows the children to explore, sort, and categorise different materials, reinforcing their understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility. We've also embraced creative reuse by transforming toilet roll tubes into musical shakers, showing the children how everyday items can be given new life through imagination and creativity.

Observing Natural Changes

Our exploration of change extends beyond the seaside to our classroom garden, where we've been nurturing broad bean plants from seeds. The children have taken turns caring for these plants, watering them, and recording their observations as they watch the beans sprout, grow leaves, and reach towards the light. This hands-on gardening experience teaches patience and helps children understand the natural cycles of growth.

Life Cycle Discovery

Perhaps the most magical part of our topic has been observing the incredible transformation of caterpillars into butterflies. The children have been captivated watching these tiny creatures grow, form chrysalises, and emerge as beautiful butterflies. This real-life science lesson brings the wonder of metamorphosis right into our classroom, helping children understand that change is a natural and essential part of life.

Through this topic, our young learners are developing a deeper appreciation for the natural world while understanding their role as environmental stewards for the future.
