Nursery Summer Term

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our learning theme for this term is ‘Competitions’. The big Question that we will be asking is “What Does It Mean to Be a Winner?

This theme is designed to support the children’s confidence, social skills and early mathematical development.

At Nursery age, competition is not about being the fastest or finishing first. Instead, we focus on helping children understand that:

  • Everyone can be a winner
  • Trying your best is important
  • Practising helps us improve
  • Working together and being kind matters
  • Taking part is something to celebrate

Children will learn that they can “win” by:

  • Having a go
  • Not giving up
  • Helping a friend
  • Learning something new
  • Feeling proud of themselves

Mathematics: “Winning with Numbers”

Throughout the term, children will take part in fun, practical maths challenges, including:

  • Counting objects and actions
  • Comparing amounts (more, fewer, the same)
  • Exploring shape, space and patterns
  • Measuring Time: sequencing events (first, next, after, before, morning, afternoon, evening, yesterday, tomorrow.
  • Sorting, matching and sequencing
  • Making numbers in different ways

Children are encouraged to beat their own score, rather than compete against others.

Sports Day Preparation

As part of this theme, the children will gradually practise simple physical challenges in preparation for our Nursery Sports Day. Activities include:

  • Running and balancing
  • Throwing and jumping
  • Team and turn taking games

Sports Day will be a celebration of participation and effort, with all children receiving recognition for their achievements
