Our Term of Discovery: Learning About "People Who Help Us"
What an exciting term we've had in our classroom exploring the theme "People Who Help Us!"
Our students have embarked on a wonderful journey of discovery, meeting the everyday heroes who make our community function and thrive.
We began our exploration within our own school walls, inviting Auntie Mel, our dedicated school secretary, and Mr. Evans, our headteacher, to share insights about their important roles. The children were fascinated to learn about all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our school running smoothly each day.
A highlight for many students was our cooking session with Auntie Natalie, our talented school cook, who guided the children in making delicious wraps. This hands-on experience not only taught them about nutrition and food preparation but also gave them a deeper appreciation for the care that goes into preparing their school meals.

Hands-On Investigations
Our classroom transformed into a hub of scientific and creative exploration through several engaging activities:
- Germ Investigation: Using UV light technology, students conducted a fascinating experiment to see how germs spread. This visual demonstration helped reinforce the importance of proper handwashing—a skill emphasised by many of our healthcare visitors!
- Forensic Footprint Analysis: Taking inspiration from our police visitors, we measured footprints to solve a classroom "crime." This activity developed both mathematical skills and critical thinking as students worked to identify the culprit.
- Emergency Vehicle Art: Students channelled their creativity by drawing detailed pictures of emergency vehicles. This art project reinforced their understanding of different emergency services while developing their observational and artistic abilities.
Our learning extended beyond the school grounds with an enlightening trip to the RNLI, where students learned about water safety and the brave individuals who rescue people in danger at sea.

We've also been fortunate to welcome several community helpers into our classroom, including a midwife, health visitor, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. Each visitor shared valuable information about their profession and how they serve others. Our students asked thoughtful questions and gained new perspectives on these essential roles
Throughout this unit, we've observed the children's growing understanding of community interdependence and the importance of helping others. Many have even started expressing interest in these careers for their own futures!
As we conclude this theme, we'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our guest speakers and the parents who supported our trips and activities. These experiences have brought our curriculum to life in meaningful ways.
